Here at Newport Live, we offer so many ways to unwind, get fit, make new friends and find new interests. From gym classes, to the running track, from public swims to workshops and from theatre performances to cinema screenings, our sport and leisure provision for Newport is unrivalled. We're proud of everything we do for and within our communities, and as part of Stress Awareness Months 2026 theme "Be The Change" we're encouraging YOU to take ownership of your mindfulness and your mental health and take advantage of the sport and leisure opportunities offered to you in the city.

How Sport and Leisure can help manage Stress:

  • Releases feel‑good hormones – Physical activity boosts endorphins, which naturally lift mood and reduce feelings of stress or anxiety. Whether it's a walk with Momentwm, a HYROX class at the Sports Village or a yoga class at the Riverfront - you'll feel better afterwards.
  • Reduces muscle tension – Movement helps relax tight muscles caused by prolonged stress, easing physical discomfort. At Newport Live we have a range of low impact classes which can also help you stretch and relax such as our Tuesday Twilight yoga! But - any movement can help reduce muscle tension, provided you have the all clear to exercise and of course make sure you stretch afterwards.
  • Improves sleep quality – Regular exercise and active leisure support deeper, more restful sleep, making stress easier to manage. Whether you're a sleep deprived parent, peri menopausal or just struggle to find time for enough downtime/sleep, taking time out for yourself will improve your sleep quality - even if you're not actually getting any more sleep.
  • Provides a mental break – Leisure activities like swimming, walking, cinema, or theatre give your mind time away from daily pressures.
  • Builds resilience to stress – Exercise trains your body and mind to cope better with physical and emotional challenges. It's a welcome distraction -whether you prefer to train on your own or in a group setting such as our Momentwm walks, rides, or our group exercise classes.
  • Encourages mindfulness – Activities such as yoga, stretching, cycling or arts and crafts help focus attention on the present moment. Keep an eye on our social media to see what's coming up and try something new to help you become more mindful this month,
  • Boosts confidence and self-esteem – Achieving goals  whether that be to complete the Couch 2 5k walking challenge from Momentwm or to join another class or group can improve self-belief, reducing stress linked to self-doubt.
  • Offers social connection – Group exercise and leisure activities create opportunities to connect, laugh, and feel supported. We're all about Inspiring, Happier & Healthier at Newport Live and there really is something for everyone.
  • Improves energy and focus – Regular movement increases energy levels, helping you feel more capable of handling stressors.
  • Creates routine and control – Scheduling exercise or leisure time provides structure, helping you feel more balanced and in control. It's a bit of YOU time, whether that be for a film you've been wanting to see, a coffee with a friend or trying a new class.
