How to get involved

There are a variety of ways you can volunteer at Newport Live. You may wish to be an events volunteer with The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre. You may prefer to be outside and support the Mometwm team with their walking and cycling groups, or you could support the Newport Live coaches and help to deliver activities at our leisure facilities or with our Community Sports and Wellbeing teams.

Volunteering Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours a week do I have to volunteer for?

At the start of your volunteering journey, you will have a chat with your volunteer contact officer. At this meeting you will be able to discuss with your contact what you are able to commit to. There are no minimum hours that you have to commit to. It will depend on the activity that you are volunteering in. At a One-day Festival, we ask that you commit to 2 hours, but if you are available for more that would be greatly appreciated. If you are a supporting a coached sports session. These usually start from half an hour a week to a few hours a week. 

Will I get support?

At the start of your volunteering journey, we will allocate you a volunteer contact officer. They will be the person that introduces you to and supports you through the Newport Live volunteer programme. You will be invited to come in and have a chat with your volunteer contact officer. At this meeting you will be able to discuss with your contact what you are able to commit to, what you want to achieve out of your volunteering experience.

Do you have to commit to being a volunteer for a certain period of time?

At the start of your volunteering journey, you will have a chat with your volunteer contact officer. At this meeting you will be able to discuss with your contact what you are able to commit to. Some people just want to volunteer on an ad-hoc basis by supporting One-day Festivals. Whilst others may wish to commit to a regular weekly session. As a volunteer the period of time you commit to is up to you.  

Will I get training?

Yes, you will receive an induction to your role from your volunteer contact officer. They will also be able to direct you to a series of online training sessions appropriate to your volunteer role. 

Where will I be based?

This will depend on what role you are volunteering in. Most of the arts and cultural festivals are based in and around The Riverfront Theatre. Sports coaching volunteering opportunities may be based within a leisure centre, in a school or out in a community setting. Momentwm opportunities could be based at various locations around the city. This is a conversation that you can have with your volunteer contact officer.

Can I apply for and volunteer in a more than one role?

Yes of course, there are various volunteer opportunities open to you in Newport Live. Complete the application form for the role that you are interested in and this will be discussed with your volunteer contact officer. 

Do you have a role specification role description for each volunteering role?

Yes, there is a role description specific for each volunteering role. As you can imagine the role of a sports coach volunteer will be very different from a Festival helper. These role descriptions can be found on the Newport Live Volunteer webpage.  

What age can you volunteer from?

Anyone above the age of 18 is able to apply to be a volunteer. There are some volunteering opportunities such as some coached sports sessions that will be open to young volunteers from the age of 14. The age of a potential volunteer will be reviewed and acceptance will depend on the session and the location of the activity.  

Can I apply if I have a medical condition/disability/learning difficulty?

Yes, we ask that you declare this and discuss this with your volunteer contact officer. They will be able to ascertain the appropriateness of the volunteering opportunity, how best to support you and make reasonable adjustments where necessary.  

Will I get paid?

No, a volunteer role is not a paid role. A volunteer carries out different roles than a paid employee. You will receive a volunteer welcome pack containing a drawstring bag, notebook, pen, water bottle and volunteer lanyard.
