Newport Bus, the principal operator of bus services in Newport, has announced a new service is to be added to their network in August.
The new 45 service will link Newport City Centre with Newport Live’s Regional Pool & Tennis Centre and the RSPB Newport Wetlands Reserve, also operating via East Docks Road, offering a convenient link between leisure and nature.
Commencing on 11 August, the service will provide seven journeys a day to the Regional Pool and Tennis Centre, with four of these journeys extending to the Wetlands Monday to Friday and three journeys on a Saturday. Buses will stop right outside the Regional Pool and Tennis Centre and at the Wetlands car park, making it easy to get active or explore the outdoors without the hassle of driving or parking.
As part of the launch of the new service Newport Bus has also announced that the service will be free for the first week, with the service also being included in their ‘Family for a Fiver’ offer during the school holidays.
Alex Clarke, Commercial Manager at Newport Bus said, “The launch of the new service comes after meeting with several community groups in Newport who raised this as an area that has historically not been served directly with a bus service. We hope that the timetable can develop as more people use the service.”
Newport Live offers a wide range of affordable activities, including free swim sessions for under 17’s, over 60’s and the armed forces. Plus, an exciting programme of summer holiday activities to keep children and young people active and engaged.
Andrea Ovey, Director of Business Development at Newport Live added, “We’re thrilled to see this new bus service launch, making it even easier for our community to access Newport Live’s facilities and the beautiful Newport Wetlands. This initiative supports our shared mission to help people lead healthier, more active lives. We’re incredibly grateful to Newport Bus for their commitment to improving local transport links and helping residents connect with both leisure and nature.”
2025 marks RSPB Newport Wetlands Reserve’s 25th anniversary and an area that was once an industrial wasteland, is now a haven for wildlife and a symbol of nature’s resilience. The 45 service will further compliment the current demand-responsive service in the area.
Kirsty Lindsay, RSPB Newport Wetlands Site Manager said “We’re very excited to welcome a regular bus service to RSPB Newport Wetlands, making it easier than ever for people to visit and enjoy this beautiful nature reserve. As we celebrate 25 years of protecting and connecting people with nature, this new service is a brilliant addition—especially in helping to improve accessibility for all. This new travel option supports more inclusive, sustainable access to nature. We hope to see many of you using the service to explore the Wetlands and experience the stunning wildlife on your doorstep.”
