This summer The Riverfront Theatre & Arts Centre are delighted to be hosting a range of shows and activities for families to enjoy together. From big name shows to free street theatre, there is something coming up for everyone over the Summer.

Up first on Saturday 18 June is a brand-new show from renowned award-winning children’s author Terry Deary, Twisted Tales. Known for making history accessible for younger audiences through humorous education, this new show from Deary promises fact-based, fast-paced fun as three actors perform over 100 roles, in a brilliantly funny and educational piece

Audiences will meet a number of characters including Mr Pimm, a Victorian school teacher who battles against all odds to teach his pesky pupils a thing or two with hilarious consequences in the quest to discover ‘can the past really tell the future?’ The show promises to be full of unexpected highs and lows, quick costume changes and sharp wit that will leave the audiences aged 8 and over rolling around with laughter.

On Saturday 2 July a host of well-known and much-loved children’s TV characters step on to the stage ready to entertain in Milkshake! Live: Monkey’s Musical.

Milkshake! Monkey will put on a spectacular show, joined by some of his favourite Milkshake! Friends plus two Milkshake! Presenters creating a dazzling show for the youngest members of the family. Join Paddington, Daisy & Ollie, Milo, Noddy, Pip & Posy, Blues Clues & You and of course Milkshake! Monkey for an unforgettable family show full of amazing songs, dances, laughter and audience interaction.

As we welcome the summer holidays, The Riverfront are thrilled to be bringing their free family street theatre festival Big Splash back to Newport city centre! Taking place on the first weekend of the summer holidays, Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July, the festival will once again amaze, amuse and entertain local people and visitors of all ages with the fantastic arts activity on offer.

This year there will be free entertainment popping up in a number of zones across the city centre, including the river walkway, John Frost Square and Commercial Street, which will include street theatre, busking, workshops and arts and craft activities. The Riverfront itself will also be transformed into family hub Splashtonbury, encouraging the whole family to get involved in the arts and creativity.

As the festival approaches The Riverfront will be sharing more information on the acts due to appear on their website and social media channels, but it’s a date for your diary!

On Sunday 31 July we welcome a comedy-circus show from Australia, Chores. Chores is the story of a brother and sister who have to clean up their messy room so they can ride their bicycles. A storyline families can all relate to, this show is jam-packed full of cool stunts, acrobatic flips, roller skates, juggling and hilarious toilet paper guns!

Inspired by Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, this physical comedy features little language and is suitable for diverse audiences of all ages.
