The 12-week programme, which is a collaboration between Newport Live and the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, is designed to provide a 'comprehensive' approach to weight management. The programme had a soft launch last year, and is relaunching again this year with additional routes to entry.
People will be referred to the programme by their GP or another health professional, or can refer themselves and receive weekly one-on-one support, personalised fitness programmes, regular health checks, and nutrition education.
The first part of the programme will begin in May 2026 and will roll out at The Regional Pool & Tennis Centre in the Newport International Sports Village, Spytty.
Stephani Hall, Active Lifestyle and Wellbeing Coordinator at Newport Live, said: "The Weight Management programme is a fantastic way of improving the health and wellbeing of Newport’s residents and communities.
"Of course, we already have the National Exercise Referral Scheme in operation here at Newport Live and this is another addition to that – enabling really specific measures and actions to improve people's weight when that has become a barrier to good health, activity levels, and overall wellbeing. It’s great that people can now self refer too, at which point they’ll be assessed for their eligibility for the programme."
Participants will have an initial consultation that includes a fitness assessment, a health check, and a programme setup, before starting the 12-week programme.
Health checks will be scheduled throughout the programme to monitor progress and workshops will be provided to help manage issues such as cravings, emotional eating, and long-term lifestyle habits.
There will also be drop-in forums and group check-ins that will take place both virtually and in-person to help keep participants engaged.
At the end of the programme, participants will be given a final review and encouraged to continue their journey with various programmes, activities, and memberships at Newport Live.
Andrea Ovey, director of business development at Newport Live, said: "At Newport Live we strive to make fitness, wellbeing and sports accessible to all.
"We run lots of different programmes and activities to assist with this – as well as our range of fitness memberships.
"We are excited to launch the Weight Management programme and we look forward to seeing the positive impact this programme will have on our community."
