The Riverfront Theatre & Arts Centre is proud to celebrate National Panto Day by marking a major milestone in its history - over two decades of pantomimes with their 2025 production of Rapunzel presenting the venue’s 20th pantomime.
Since opening its doors in 2004 with its first pantomime, Aladdin, The Riverfront has become a cultural hub for festive family entertainment, welcoming thousands of audience members every year. Over the years, the annual pantomime has grown into one of Newport’s most cherished seasonal traditions, offering many young people their first introduction to live theatre.
This year’s National Panto Day theme is transformation, a fitting reflection not only of the magical stories told on stage, but of The Riverfront’s own transformation throughout the last 20 years. From new creative partnerships to expanding audiences and evolving productions, the pantomime has played a central role in the theatre’s identity and development.
Over the past two decades, The Riverfront has staged an impressive variety of beloved titles, beginning with Aladdin in 2004 and followed by festive favourites such as Dick Whittington, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, Robin Hood, and Beauty and the Beast. These much-loved productions have returned in different forms over the years, delighting new generations of audiences. In 2025, The Riverfront presents its 20th pantomime, Rapunzel, and the magic will continue into 2026 with the return of Cinderella.

As part of the celebrations, The Riverfront is inviting the community to share their favourite pantomime memories from the past two decades - from unforgettable characters to annual family traditions. These stories will be highlighted throughout the season as part of the theatre’s anniversary reflections.
“Reaching 20 pantomimes is a huge achievement for The Riverfront,” said Sharon Casey, Head of Theatre, Arts and Culture at The Riverfront Theatre. “Panto has always been about bringing people together, spreading joy, and building community. As we celebrate National Panto Day, we’re proud to look back at how much we’ve grown and how many magical moments we’ve shared with the people of Newport.”
