Children and young people with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) will be able to enjoy a free inclusive disco at The Riverfront on Thursday 14 August following funding from the Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner.
The funding has enabled The Riverfront to deliver a programme of accessible summer activities designed to support children and young people who can face barriers to participating in arts and cultural events, particularly those with disabilities, Additional Learning Needs and those from low-income families.
As part of the programme, two specially designed Summer Discos will provide a welcoming and supportive environment where children and young people can socialise, dance, take part in games, build confidence and have fun in a space tailored to their needs.
The discos will feature music, bubbles, movement, creative play and sensory experiences, with participants encouraged to take part in their own way. A quieter, calmer space will also be available for those who would benefit from taking time away from the main activity.
The sessions have been developed in response to feedback from local families, who highlighted the importance of dedicated activities for children and young people with ALN and disabilities. While many mainstream activities are inclusive, families said bespoke sessions help children build confidence and allow parents and carers to feel more comfortable accessing cultural opportunities.
Sally-Anne Evans, Senior Creative Development Coordinator at The Riverfront Theatre & Arts Centre, said: "We're extremely grateful for the support from the Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner, which has enabled us to provide these free sessions for local families. We know there is a real demand for activities specifically designed for children and young people with Additional Learning Needs. These discos create opportunities to build confidence, make friendships and enjoy creative experiences in a space where children and families feel welcomed, understood and supported."
The free discos will take place at The Riverfront on Thursday 14 August, with two age-specific sessions:
· 2.30pm to 3.30pm for children aged 5-7 years
· 4pm to 5pm for children aged 7+ years
