Wales National Velodrome was officially renamed the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales - known on a daily basis as the Geraint Thomas Velodrome - on 2nd September 2018 at a ceremony attended by Geraint Thomas MBE, who was there to see the unveiling of the huge image on the front of the building.

The Velodrome in Newport is Wales’ official national Velodrome, home to Welsh Cycling and hosts national and international competitions, including use by British Cycling for practice sessions. The Velodrome hosted Team GB and Paralympic GB as they prepared for the Olympic and Paralympic games in Rio 2016, London 2012, Beijing 2008 and Athens in 2004. In summer 2012 the Australian and USA Paralympic cycling teams also trained in Newport ahead of the London Paralympic Games.

The facilities at the Velodrome also include an Newport Live Gym, Indoor Group Cycling Studio, group exercise studio, free weights gym, multi-purpose indoor sports arena, 3G Football Pitch and function rooms available to hire.

There is also an outdoor speedway cycling track hosting Newport Cycle Speedway Club.
