Wales Coast Path lighthouse

The (Future) Wales Coast Path art project concludes this October with a free, public programme of events, including a light procession, lantern making workshops, walks and more.

In April 2022, Lighthouse appeared at Magor Marsh  and the Riverfront, Newport, with each light connecting us in Wales to our friends in the Bay of Bengal via live tidal data.

The lighthouses physicalise the future of our shoreline and highlight the habitat and communities that exist in this fragile space between past and future shorelines. Over the past year, communities have been invited to walk together from the current shoreline to the future edge of the land, to document, share stories, and begin conversations about the future of this place as we seek to acknowledge and adapt to our shifting coastline.

On Friday 21st October, people are invited to take part in a one-mile lantern-lit walk along the River Usk following high tide, before meeting at Community House for food, art and conversation. On Saturday 22nd October, another light procession takes place from Magor Marsh to the seawall, ending with a community gathering in Magor Square. At both events, audiences will have a chance to see films made by workshop participants on Sagar Island in the Bay of Bengal, where sea level rise is being felt more acutely.

In preparation for the light processions, audiences can take part in free lantern making workshops on 11th October at Gwent Wildlife Trust Magor Marsh and 13th October at Community House, Newport.
