Aleighcia Scott

Friday 6 - Reggae/Jamaican Independence Day

Opening our summer of live music on Jamaican Independence Day is Cardiff born Welsh/Jamaican reggae artist Aleighcia Scott who has previously performed at The Riverfront as part of Big Splash and International Womens Day.

Performing on stage from as young as 7, Aleighcia is now a full time artist and is set to release her debut album that she has been working on in both Jamaica and the UK (with the legendary producer Rory Stonelove who has recently featured on the latest Beyoncé/Jay Z project) very soon. She has won various awards such as Radio Cardiff’s Best Local Artist and is a double winner of the MMG award for ‘Best Reggae Act’, with performances under her belt from Glastonbury, BBC Introducing stages, international stages and more 

 

Also performing will be steel drummer Wahda Placide.

Friday 13 - Folk & Poetry Evening

Performing on Friday 13 August will be ​​​​​​​Araby, Krystal S Lowe, Sarah McCreadie ​​and Bryony Sier.

 

Araby (folk artist)

Araby is a folk musician and storyteller from South Wales. His music and stories blend together and bring people right the the centre of his creative process, submerging the audience into his weird little world. 

Krystal S Lowe (poet)

Krystal S. Lowe is a Bermuda-born, Wales-based poet, short story and script writer whose work explores themes of intersectional identity, mental health and wellbeing, and empowerment. 

Recent works include:  ‘Whimsy’ commissioned by Articulture Wales; ‘Rewild’ commissioned by Green Man Trust; ‘Daughters of the Sea’ commissioned by Ffilm Cymru, BBC Arts, BBC Cymru, and Arts Council Wales; ‘Seven’ commissioned by Le Public Space’s online festival Right Now;  ‘Somehow’ commissioned by Music Theatre Wales; and ‘Complexity of Skin’ commissioned by the Space for BBC’s Culture in Quarantine

Sarah McCreadie (poet)

Sarah McCreadie is a poet and writer from Cardiff. Sarah has performed her poetry from Newport to New York. She is a BBC 1Xtra 'Words First' poet, resident artist alumni at the Roundhouse theatre in London and a former member of the Roundhouse's poetry collective. She has also collaborated with Vanity Fair, ITV, BBC and The Guilty Feminist podcast. You can find Sarah and her work on YouTube and on Twitter at @Girl_Like_Sarah

Bryony Sier (folk-pop artist)

Bryony Sier is an acclaimed folk-pop artist from the UK whose unique sound/vibe draws upon a wide variety of influences but is shaped especially by her love of folk, blues, soul, gospel and country music. Still only in her early twenties, the soulful power and maturity of Bryony’s voice has already caught the attention of some of the biggest names in the music industry.

Over recent years she has performed as a support act for the likes of Steph Cameron, Twin Bandit, Rick Wakeman, Molly Tuttle and Rachel Baiman, and she has worked with producers and songwriters such as Charlie Francis (R.E.M.) and Amy Wadge (Ed Sheeran).  Bryony plays regularly on regional and national BBC radio and has performed everywhere from Swn, FOCUS Wales and Tadstock to Between the Trees and Nozstock. Bryony’s last single ‘ID’ was included on the BBC Sounds Wales Mix. Bryony's new EP 'Personal Monster' has been released through the Orchard and is now available to listen to on all streaming platforms.

Friday 20 - Who Runs the World?

Performing as part of our 'Who Runs The World?' event will be female vocal trio J-Birds,  soloist Selena Jerome, poet Krystal S Lowe and the evening will be hosted by Niques.

Selena Jerome (Selena in the Chapel)

Selena in the Chapel is a Soulful Singer/Songwriter and Acoustic performer from Newport, South Wales.A Poet with a powerful message and a raw talent for turning the words on the page into well-crafted storytelling, which is only heightened by her intricate guitar playing and vocal prowess. For fans of Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Kate Nash

JBirds

The J Birds are a Fun loving, feisty female vocal trio based in South Wales, singing & dancing in all styles and genres from 1940s vintage to modern pop and classical! Made up of Jessica, Joanna and Jacqueline, all three girls are professional musicians based in Cardiff. 

Niques

Bubbly unique experimental Niques is brewing a storm bringing a breath of fresh air into the music world. She religiously projects her humour through her creations, along with her catchy personality. Her phenomenal stage presence entices an audience like a kid to a candy shop. Niques composes her own lyrics as well as compose beats she can adapt her style to any genre.

Krystal S Lowe

Pete Ak (Poet)

Pete Ak is a spoken word performer who reveals verities with untruths, a plain speaker with a penchant for rhyme, a straight talker whose sentences twist and turn! Growing up in the Wales as the only black boy in town he is ‘a different kind of valley boy’ - his verse is a reflection of that!

 

Spud Nicolle (Musician) 

Spud Nicolle is a folk/acoustic loop pedal artist. Spud grew up in West Wales and his music is inspired by his Welsh/Irish heritage. 

 

Katielou (Musician)

Katielou is an acoustic singer songwriter from Usk and has a passion for writing! She has been gigging around The UK for the past 4 years & her new single Boys has just been released on all major platforms with an album in the works - keep your eye out for much more to come!

 

Araby (Musician and host)

Make a big splash in your little bubble! Free creative arts activities, Live street theatre plus music throughout the day in  safe and welcoming spaces. 

What to Expect

Times of events and workshops can be found below. Booking is not required however spaces are limited. As such, at busy times there may be a wait and you may be asked to wait outside. If activities are full, art packs are available for you to take away and enjoy at home. 

Parking will not be available on site. Parking is available next the Alacrity building, at Friar's Walk or Kingsway.

Saturday 7 

Reality Theatre Summer Parade

Procession will take place at 10.30am & 1.30pm

Reality Theatre is helping to celebrate the summer with a fun parade! There will be a range of fun face-masks full of animals, flowers, feathers, glitter, for you to decorate and wear. Then you can choose your musical instrument (or even make your own!) and join in a fun-filled drama and music workshop, to learn the moves for the big parade.
  
Reality Theatre will then be marching and singing and beating their drums to the songs we have learned, to celebrate the summer! 

 

The Sparklettes - It Don’t Mean a Thing
Various times throughout the day between 11am and 3.30pm

The Sparklettes bring the glitter and sparkle of the 1920s to this this routine featuring the freedom and exuberance of the Charleston with a modern twist.

Stay after the performance for a hula hoop workshop and learn all the skills you need to become a hula hero.

 

Dino Disco
Various times throughout the day between 11am and 3.30pm

Open the door, get on the floor, come and dance Disco with the dinosaurs. Join in our Dino disco and party like it’s 65 million BC.

Saturday 14 - Bring Me Sunshine by Splatch Arts 

 

Bring Me Sunshine performances will take place at 11.30am & 2.30pm

‘Bring me Sunshine’ combines circus, storytelling and a dash of the absurd. A playful and heartfelt account of Leyton’s experiences of living with multiple sclerosis. Becoming Ringmaster with two mischievous circus idiots by his side, we take a glimpse in to his world!

Tobias Robertson

Performing regular shows since the age of 16 has given Tobias Robertson a wealth of experience in front of a range of audiences and left him with a calm and comfortable demeanour onstage. Having been asked to audition for The Voice UK 2016 after an appearance at a local open mic, Tobias appeared twice on the show. Performing Randy Newman's famous "You've Got A Friend In Me" from Disney's Toy Story secured a slot on Boy George's Team.

Niques

Saturday 21 - Afanc by f.a.b. The Detonators

 

Performances will take place at 11.30am, 1.30pm & 3.30pm

Follow ‘Afanc’, a feral but misunderstood beast in a watery adventure and an urgent environmental tale, told through physical theatre, dance and clowning, with captivating visuals and startling soundscapes. A fun, family-friendly theatre show with songs, ingenious recycled costumes and big teeth!

This is the story of rubbish. Yes rubbish. And what we do with it….And what it then does to us…..

Saturday 28 - Qwerin by Osian Meilir 

 

Performances will take place at 11.30am, 3.30pm

Qwerin’ is a contemporary dance performance that extends the boundaries of traditional Welsh folk dance. Taking inspiration from Queer club culture and the weaving, flowing patterns of folk dance, ‘Qwerin’ is a Welsh folk dance with a twist. 

 

Sonic Sing Along
3-4pm
Sonic Sing Alongs are hour long concerts for under 5’s and their parents.
