James Coxon, a prominent figure in the British HPV community and an acclaimed European HPV racer, has added another remarkable achievement to his list of accomplishments. On July 8th, Coxon successfully broke the 100 km World UltraCycling Association (WUCA) record for a recumbent trike at the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales.
In an impressive display of skill, determination, and speed, Coxon completed the record attempt in 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 59 seconds, with an average speed of 48.4 km/h (30.07 mph). This extraordinary feat not only secured him the WUCA record but also surpassed the 100 km indoor record set by an upright bike, which stood at 2 hours and 19 minutes.
Andrea Ovey, Director of Business Development at Newport Live said, “We were delighted to be able to support James with his World Record attempt and thrilled with his accomplishment, not only did he break the record, he smashed an incredible 15 minutes off it, which is testament to the preparation and dedication of James to his sport. The Geraint Thomas Velodrome is the only indoor velodrome in Wales and a unique environment, we were so proud of James for breaking the record here in Newport and helping to inspire other cyclists to take up the sport.”

The trike featured 20-inch wheels, a 6-speed (12-18) configuration, and a 90t carbon chainring by Digirit. Additionally, Coxon relied on a 105 Shimano derailleur, Wahoo power pedals, a Bioracer skinsuit, and an Oakley helmet to optimise his performance.
