new projects funding for the riverfront theatre & arts centre

Following a successful application to the Arts Council of Wales’ Stabilisation fund for Organisations, The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre has received funding to help support the theatre during its closure.

These vital funds will be used to support the theatre during its closure, create projects with other artists and the Newport community and to prepare the theatre for reopening when it is permitted.

The Riverfront will be launching a programme of online classes, workshops and educational materials developing from the theatre’s current programme including dance, music, drama and arts-based fitness classes.  This will include working with partners as well as commissioning local artists who will be supported with access to The Riverfront’s facilities to help take their current programme online and develop new work.

Part of the funding will also be used to upgrade and digitise the theatre’s ticketing systems to improve safety and minimise contact between customers and staff as well as to develop an arts hub on the Newport Live website. This will promote the wider arts activity which is going on in the community and act as a resource for the people of Newport to find information and activity to help them get creative, improve their mental and physical health and support a happier lifestyle.

Alan Dear, Head of Theatre, Arts and Culture at Newport Live who are responsible for running The Riverfront Theatre & Arts Centre said “We are extremely grateful to the Arts Council of Wales and National Lottery players for enabling us to receive this funding support. This will allow us to create some exciting arts projects for and with our community whilst we are closed as well as helping us to reopen safely when we are able to do so.”

This funding was made possible through funding from the Arts Council of Wales’s National Lottery Fund and thanks to National Lottery players, up to £600 million has been made available to support communities throughout the UK during the Coronavirus crisis.
