What Happens After The Referral?
Once referred to the NERS programme, you will have an initial consultation with a trained exercise specialist. This session will involve a review of your health condition, current fitness levels, and personal goals. Based on this, a personalised exercise plan will be created for you, which may include:
Gym-based exercises tailored to your condition and goals
Group classes, such as circuit training, yoga, or aqua aerobics
Outdoor activities, including walking groups or cycling
Home exercises if you prefer or need a more flexible approach
The programme usually lasts between 16 and 32 weeks, depending on your health needs and the advice of your healthcare team. During this time, your progress will be regularly assessed, and your plan can be adjusted as needed to ensure it remains suitable for your condition.
What Are the Benefits?
The NERS programme offers numerous benefits that can lead to lasting improvements in health:
Cardiovascular titness and day-to-day mobility: Regular physical activity can help improve cardiovascular fitness, build muscle strength, increase mobility, and reduce body fat. It can also lower blood pressure, manage blood sugar levels, and prevent future health complications.
Mental wellbeing: Exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress, and boost overall mood and confidence. Group activities also help combat isolation by connecting participants with others who share similar health challenges.
Long-term lifestyle changes: The goal of NERS is not only to improve participants' fitness but to help them develop habits that promote long-term health and independence. The skills and knowledge gained during the programme can empower individuals to continue an active and healthy lifestyle.
NERS also offers a social environment where participants can engage with others, fostering a sense of community and support.
