Families First Health & Wellbeing Team provide an integrated programme to support children, young people and their families who are living, or at risk of living, in poverty throughout Newport; helping them to improve their health, safety, and to enjoy wellbeing.

Our team includes staff from; Newport Live Sports and Physical Activity Development, Newport Mind, Kaleidoscope, and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Our ethos is to ensure families are supported and encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle. This may be in the form of universal health promotion messages and activities, or through specifically targeted health and wellbeing interventions depending on need. We aim to provide tailored support and intervention, at varying levels, to families with health needs and inequalities.

1:1 / Family support

We provide support via 1-to-1 work, family sessions and group work around areas including: physical inactivity, social exclusion, healthy eating and nutritional support, emotional wellbeing and support for those being affected by a loved one’s substance misuse.

The Health & Wellbeing team also deliver a number of community and school-based programmes to support young people and their families. These include:

 Kith n’ Kin

An 8-week course for parents / carers and their young people, which aims to improve communication and family relationships, help attendees to learn coping strategies, and to educate both parents / carers and their young people around mental health and associated issues.

An award-winning early years and primary school programme. The aim of the programme is to aid schools and early years settings (EYS) in meeting healthy lifestyle curriculum requirements by delivering key, consistent health messages via a 10-week programme which incorporates healthy eating, food tasting, physical activity and emotional wellbeing sessions.

Healthy Schools

The Health & Wellbeing team are also able to support Healthy Schools Week via interactive sessions focusing on key health topics, including: healthy eating, smoking prevention, emotional wellbeing, Love Food Hate Waste, healthy cookery and substance awareness workshops.
