Wales National Velodrome Track Cycling

Wales National Velodrome in Newport is one of only five internationally recognised indoor velodromes in Britain, and is Wales’ official National Velodome. The Velodrome is home to Welsh Cycling, who have daily training sessions to develop new talent and prepare for competitions, most recently the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Velodrome has previously hosted TeamGB and ParalympicsGB training camps ahead of four previous Olympic and Paralympic games, as well as Australian and USA squads in the run up to London 2012. The Velodrome is also host to 'Icebreakers', the only youth track racing series in the UK.

We offer a range of sessions and courses to suit all abilities, so take a look at what's on offer detailed below.

About the Track

The Velodrome was built in 2004, as a world class training facility with seating for 500 spectators. One lap of the track measures at 250 metres, and at either end of the track you'll find an imposing 42 degree bank. The track is an all wooden construction, made of Siberian pine - specifically chosen for it's hardwearing and resilient nature.

Class Descriptions for New Track Riders

Youth Beginners 4 week course

Introduction to the exciting discipline of Track Cycling in a safe and structured environment with a fully qualified, friendly coach. Completion of the beginner course will allow riders to access to the ever popular Saturday morning Youth Drop-in session. Sessions include bike hire, and are limited to just 10 riders per session, ensuring you benefit from dedicated support and coaching to get you flying around the track! Riders need to be able to be capable of riding continuously for 15 minutes. Booking is essential.

Adult Beginners and Improvers - 2 Week Course

Introduction to the exciting discipline of Track Cycling, fully supported by a British Cycling qualified coach. Completion of the Beginner Course is normally followed by attending our Improver Course, where you'll refine and build on your new skills, in readiness for Accreditation. Completion of the Beginner Course allows riders to access any of the drop in sessions during the week, except the SQT and Vets sessions. Booking is essential to guarantee your space.

Women’s Only Track Cycling Sessions

Wales National Velodrome is introducing some women's only cycling sessions dedicated to helping female riders develop in an environment they feel comfortable. The weekly sessions will take place on Wednesdays at 11am- 12pm for six weeks starting on Wednesday 6 June 2018.  These sessions are suitable for beginners and you can come to one session or all six. Each session costs £9.80 and all kit is provided.

While Mum is having fun, your little one can also enjoy a Cycle Tots class for free! One child under 5 will be offered a free space in a Balance Bike class run by a qualified coach, at the same time as your track cycling session.

Family Taster

Suitable for adults and juniors 10yrs+. These sessions enable riders to take their first pedal strokes on the steep banked wooden track in a safe and controlled environment, fully supported by our British Cycling Coach. Youth Drop In (Saturday)

The main youth session of the week is open to all youth riders who have progressed beyond beginner level. Coached by a qualified coach and volunteer Club coaches, this session combines skills development and fitness improvement within a fun but structured environment. Different ability groups cater for all levels of riders. Riders must have attended a beginners' course ahead of attending this session.

Endurance Lunchtime Drop-In

A coached session for all standards of riders. Session content varies depending on the season and is tailored around the requirements of the riders attending each week. Session is endurance focussed with longer drills but sprinters are welcome to attend and fit their efforts around the endurance drills. Ideal session for those training for major championships.

Lunchtime Drop-In

A coached session for all standards of riders. Session content varies and is balanced to suit the needs of riders attending with sprint drills and endurance drills. Also used as a session for riders looking to refine technique ahead of major championships where the coach can normally accommodate individual riders looking to do specific efforts in their preferred discipline (subject to numbers allowing).

Youth Race Craft Drop-In Session

This session focusses on race skills and is the feeder session to Track League. General skills and drills are supplemented by coach-led racing to offer a stimulating and stretching session for young riders. Ideal for those who are looking for another session to add to attendance at the Saturday Youth Drop-In and aim to race in Track League. Riders must have Saturday Drop-in experience and Coaches' approval to attend.

Accreditation Test (Ages 14+)

Riders wishing to take an Accreditation test must have been approved by their coach from the Improver Course or from attending drop in sessions. It is not possible to book onto the Accreditation unless this has taken place. Riders who have indoor Velodrome experience at other sites are welcome to attend lunchtime drop-in sessions but will not be able to book straight onto an Accreditation. Riders with questions relating to the accreditation process or with outdoor Velodrome experience looking to ride indoors should contact us on 01633 656757 and ask to speak with the Track Development Officer.


Class Descriptions for Accredited Track Riders

SQT (Structured Quality Training)

Accredited riders only. An experienced coach will lead riders through group drills to develop and improve fitness and skills during the winter months. SQT runs from October to March. Pre booking advised as these sessions can regularly sell out. 40 riders maximum.

Veteran Drop-In

Accredited Riders aged 35+ (or all ages for ladies) are encouraged to attend the drop-in sessions on Friday nights, where there will be endurance and sprint work built into the sessions. Sessions are led by an experienced coach, who will lead riders through group drills to develop and improve fitness and skills. Riders may attend for the full 2 and a half hours, or drop-in early or late.
