Mermaids Sessions Newport Live

This new and exciting course uses monofins and tails for swimmers to learn mermaid poses and sequences in a fun and structured environment.

Our Tails 1 - 7 programme builds on water confidence, flexibility and strength. Working with and against the water, swimmers will improve their technique, speed, co-ordination and fitness levels.

All prospective mer-people must be in Stage 4 Swimming or above & confident with basic dolphin kick.

About the lessons...

Tails 1 

On completion of Tails 1, your merchild will be able to...

1. Demonstrate the correct way to put on and take off a mono-fin
2. Enter the water safely while wearing a mono-fin
3. Push off from the wall and glide on your front and back without a mono-fin
4. Travel 10m with a butterfly leg kick without a mono-fin
5. Push off from the wall and glide on your front with a mono-fin
6. Travel 5m with a butterfly leg kick with a mono-fin, and with your arms by your side
7. Perform one mermaid/ merman pose (dry side acceptable)
8. Demonstrate understanding of what a mono-fin is
9. Successfully take your mono-fin off

Tails 2

On completion of Tails 2, your merchild will be able to...

1. Travel 15m on your front, doing a butterfly leg kick without your mono-fin, with your arms by your side or extended in front of you
2. Travel 10m on your front, doing a butterfly leg kick with your mono-fin, with your arms extended
3. Push off from the wall and glide on your back, wearing your mono-fin and with your arms extended
4. Travel 5m on your back, wearing your mono-fin, with your arms by your side
5. Push off from the wall and glide on your front, with your arms extended, then log roll onto your back wearing your mono-fin
6. Push off from the wall and glide on your back, with your arms extended, then log roll onto your front while wearing your mono-fin
7. Perform a mushroom float while wearing your mono-fin
8. Demonstrate confidence when submerging wearing your mono-fin
9. Exit the water safely without using the steps and sit in the correct position, wearing mono-fin,

Tails 3

On completion of Tails 3, your merchild will be able to...

1. Travel 25m on your front, while doing a butterfly leg kick, wearing a mono-fin and tail, and submerging when confident.
2. Travel 10m with alternating arms while wearing mono-fin and tail.
3. Push off and glide on front, then rotate onto back with arms extended, while wearing mono-fin and tail.
4. Push off and glide on back, then rotate onto front with arms extended, wearing mono-fin and tail.
5. Perform a tuck float on your back, holding your tail.
6. Perform a stationary horizontal scull.
7. Perform two mermaid/ merman poses, one of which must be submerged.
8. Submerge to pick up a clam shell.
9. Give one benefit of using a mono-fin.
10. Exit the pool safely, taking off mono-fin and tail correctly.

Tails 4

On completion of Tails 4, your merchild will be able to...

1. Travel 15m with a full butterfly stroke, with controlled breathing. Arm action does not need to be required standard.
2. Submerge on your front, push and glide, and rotate to your back with arms extended.
3. Submerge on your back, push and glide, and rotate to your front with arms extended.
4. Perform head-first sculling for 10m in a horizontal position.
5. Travel 10m submerged, with one arm stretched in front and the other by your side, using a butterfly kick. Swap for 10m on the opposite side.
6. Submerge to go through a hoop, with arms by your side.
7. Travel 25m with your arms by your side, using a butterfly kick. At 15m, submerge and swim through hoops with your arms extended.
8. Perform two mermaid/ merman poses submerged.
9. Take part in a teacher-led game, being part of a team, submerging to find the clams and mermaid pearls.

Tails 5

On completion of Tails 5, your merchild will be able to...

1. Swim 25m butterfly, with rhythmical breathing required to standard.
2. Submerge for 20m on your front, streamlined with butterfly kick and arms extended and breathing when required. Rotate after 10m, stay streamlined, with your arms extended and a butterfly kick on your back.
3. Perform a surface dive.
4. Perform three mermaid/ merman poses submerged.
5. Describe two benefits of using a mono-fin.
6. Perform two shapes in deep water.
7. Submerge, push off from the wall and glide to pool floor, with your arms extended or by your side.
8. Perform a handstand in shallow water.
9. Push off from the wall, then glide into a forward somersault.

Tails 6 

On completion of Tails 6, your merchild will be able to...

1. Swim 50 m butterfly legs submerged, rhythmically breathing when needed, for 10 m swim with one arm extended in front other arm at side then swop over arms for 10 m then for the rest of the 50m arms extended.
2. Submerge rotate vertically demonstrate a mermaid twirl.
3. Perform stationary vertical sculling.
4. Perform a backward somersault.
5. Perform three shapes with a partner on the surface of the water.
6. With a partner submerge and demonstrate three mermaid poses with smooth transition mimic each other.
7. Submerge and swim through a hoop on your side arms extended.
8. Take part in a teacher led game gliding and rotating with smooth transition through reef slalom and pick up clams from pool floor all performed in the deep end.

Tails 7 

On completion of Tails 7, your merchild will be able to...

1. 100m butterfly, full stroke for 50 m and 50 m butterfly legs, optional a short rest after 50m may be taken, breath when required, arms extended or by your side
2. Give three benefits of using a mono-fin
3. Perform travelling a horizontal scull for 25 m, then vertical scull for 30 seconds
4. Perform a backwards pike submerged
5. Perform a tumble turn pushing off from wall
6. Submerge swim through a hoop on your front, arms extended resurface rotate on your back, submerge and swim backwards through hoop
7. Perform a sequence of at least three movements, on the surface of the water, in a group incorporating smooth transition with two rotations and in sync/ unity
8. Complete an obstacle course set up by teacher, including hoops, slalom, sinking weed and pearl clams.
