At Newport Live we believe cycling is for EVERYbody! Riding a bike is one of the many life skills that children should be taught from a very young age, allowing them to enjoy the wonders of cycling on their health and social life throughout childhood and into adulthood.

Due to its popularity, we have extended our Children’s Cycling Programme at Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales. We want children to take the journey from balance to pedal bike with us, gaining more skills and confidence with each session!

We are also delighted to have teamed up with lightweight kids’ bike manufacturer, Frog Bikes! We have a complete range of new Frog bikes, from Tadpole balance bikes through to full size pedal bikes.

Please note: due to events, the following Sunday sessions at the Velodrome are cancelled: 16th September, 21st October and 9th December.

Balance Bikes

This session is for young children aged 2-5, who will have fun scooting around in a safe environment! Balance bikes are fantastic for developing children’s balance and basic skills to help them learn to ride alone quicker than using traditional stabilisers.
Over a few sessions, riders will be able to ‘scoot’ along quickly and - with practice - lift their legs off the ground. Each child will gain skills and confidence at different paces, but we look for children to be able to lift their feet of the ground and hold a straight line for around 5/6 seconds to make the next step - riding a bike with pedals – simple!
Children are welcome to use our new range of Frog Tadpole balance bikes and use our helmets, or you can bring your own!

When: Sundays 9am-9.45am, Geraint Thomas Velodrome. Price: £3 per rider, bike hire included.

We also offer balance bike sessions at Active Living Centre: Saturdays 10am-10.45am and 11am-11.45am, £3 per session. Please note, these are not Frog Bike sessions.

Learn to RideLearn to ride with Frog Bikes at Wales National Velodome

For children aged 4-5 years. After children gain confidence balancing and holding a straight line, we move them onto pedals. With the other riders continuing to practice on their balance bike, the coach will identify the more confident and capable riders and put them on a pedal bike.
Taking the coach’s advice, the child will try the pedal bike for themselves with the coach supporting alongside. Once riding, the coach will teach them how to start all by themselves, then they can practice with parents while the coach supports other riders. The assistant coach will be on hand to ensure riders follow all they have been taught so far.

The process of moving from balance to pedals takes about 5 minutes per rider with one to one coaching, and the coach will be able to gauge when a child is ready and when to keep practicing on the balance bike. Riders must be confident on a balance bike to take part in these sessions. We provide helmets, balance bikes and pedal bikes for this session, but children are welcome to bring their own.

When: Sundays 10:00-10:45am, Geraint Thomas Velodrome. Price: £3.80 per session, bike and helmet hire included.

First Pedals

For children of any age who have learned to ride and now need to practice some basic skills to move on to our Cycle Fun/Skills sessions. This session focuses on riding skills that can be used day to day, and covers riding a narrow track, moving around cones and how to walk, stand and check your bike. Riders will learn how to look around their surroundings when riding and how to use their brakes correctly without losing control. Riders can attend this session until they are confident and happy to move on to the next step. Use our helmets or one of our new Frog bikes, or you are welcome to bring your own.

When: Sundays 11:00-11:45, Geraint Thomas Velodrome. Price: £3.80 per rider, bike and helmet hire included.
