New season at The Riverfront

For EVERYbody: Steve Houghton

In 2017 we launched For EVERYbody, a fitness campaign with a difference! No more 'New Year, New You' messages - Newport Live is For EVERYbody, regardless of age, gender, fitness levels and abilities. Steve is one of the winners of our competition and we met him to find out more about him and his goals...

"Before I took up running, I was overweight, slow, lethargic and suffering from back pain," says Steve. "My health and fitness have improved and I have felt a real benefit in everyday life. I took up running on a C25K course 3 years ago to get some exercise, improve my fitness and lose some weight. I then joined Caerleon Running Club and I now run up to half marathon distance and have taken part in 7 half marathon races in 2017," says Steve. "Over this winter I shall be in training to complete my first full marathon in Manchester on the 8th April. I booked and paid for this before the ABP Newport Marathon was announced and - maybe foolishly - I have registered for that also, with only a three-week gap between marathons! I shall probably also run in the Newport Half Marathon. I also regularly take part in the weekly Riverfront Parkrun, either running or volunteering as a marshall."

Steve impressed the For EVERYbody panel with his ambitious aims. "I'd like to lose a little more weight, but my main focus is to improve my fitness and distance running, from 13 miles to 26 miles over the winter. I need to improve my core strength ideally through either gym classes/resistance training, and maybe do some swimming too." Steve's Newport Live membership will be perfect; as well as unlimited gym access, he can also access group exercise classes and the public swimming sessions at our pools!

Steve is realistic about his goals, which is something we feel is very important when embarking on new fitness challenges! "At 58 years old I feel running a marathon would be a huge achievement, particularly when old school friends were telling me I am too old to take up distance running," he says. "Whatever happens in future, I intend to keep active in some way or other, depending on my capabilities at the time."

Pob lwc Steve, we look forward to following you on your journey!
